The Saul Bell Design Award Competition

Recognizing Distinction In Jewelry Design

History of the Saul Bell Design Award

The Saul Bell Design Award competition was inspired by a birthday party at Rio Grande in 2000, celebrating what would have been Saul’s 100th birthday. Because Saul had worked every day until just 12 days before his passing at age 96, nearly every customer and employee in attendance had a story to share. Many jewelers shared stories of how he had helped them to see their potential, encouraged them to try new things, supported their efforts to improve technically and taught them at every opportunity.

The Saul Bell Design Award was born out of the collective desire to honor the spirit of Saul Bell and his life’s work by encouraging all jewelers to push their limits and develop and apply their skills—at whatever place they are in their journey. The Saul Bell Design Award competition has focused on various categories throughout its history and our intention is to remain in touch with trends that we see and invite a wide variety of styles and artistry. We hope that this is a venue that supports innovation and aids in the progression of career development.

Through the award’s first 20 years and now into the future, it is our goal that Saul’s influence continues to inspire and enlighten jewelers everywhere. The Saul Bell Design Award competition’s array of awards, prizes and special benefits helps support jewelry artists as they move along their chosen career paths.
